The Ingham County Youth Center supports a 24 bed detention unit which houses juvenile offenders for crimes such as; armed robbery, murder, arson and controlled substances violations as well as many other felony offenses.  The Ingham County Youth Center, a division of the 30th Judicial Circuit Court, is responsible for providing temporary custody and care for juveniles in a safe and secure setting. Juveniles that are placed in our detention facility are temporarily detained pending disposition of court programs, or often awaiting transfer to another facility or placement.

The detention facility is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 365 days a year.
Secure detention is a facility characterized by locks on the doors and other restrictive hardware designed to restrict the movement of the residents and protect public safety. Ingham County Youth Center secure detention program aims to give youth the chance to make positive change in their lives. Detention is viewed as a time to provide education, medical/dental, mental health, case management, Rational Behavior Training and other much-needed services. The facilities and their programs are a nationally recognized model for juvenile detention.

Reasons for Detention

Juveniles apprehended during commission of a crime are detained pending investigation.

►Juveniles who have violated their Court-Ordered terms of probation, detained as a sanction and to reinforce importance of Court order.

►Juveniles on probation who have violated their Court-Ordered probation terms or committed new offense, three to ten days.

►Juveniles on probation who have violated their Court-Ordered probation terms or committed a new offense and require a new treatment plan, 10 to 60 days. These juveniles are generally experiencing problems at home, school and in the community and require in-depth diagnosis and programming to deal with their problems.  Several of these juveniles require preparation for placement in Intensive Probation in their own home or for placement in foster homes or group homes.

►Juveniles on probation who violated their probation terms or committed a new criminal offense and require placement in a residential facility over 30 days.

Day Rooms

Juveniles are housed in two different day rooms. Each day room is designed to house twelve juveniles in a single-person cell.  The East Day Room houses females and South Day Room houses males.
